The Old Capital Tavern offers delicious educational opportunities through our beer dinner offerings. We pair a meal with different beer offered by a select brewery with a representative from the brewery guiding the meal. This is a wonderful opportunity to eat a great meal and drink some wonderful beer.

Beer Education

There are primarily two (2) types of beers: ales and lagers.

Ale is a type of beer brewed from malted barley using a warm fermentation with a strain of brewers' yeast. The yeast will ferment the beer quickly, giving it a sweet, full bodied and fruity taste. Most ales contain hops, which help preserve the beer and impart a bitter herbal flavour that balances the sweetness of the malt.

Lager is a type of beer made from malted barley that is brewed and stored at low temperatures. There are many types of lager; pale lager is the most widely-consumed and commercially available style of beer in the world; Pilsner, Bock, Dortmunder Export and Märzen are all styles of lager. There are also dark lagers, such as Dunkel and Schwarzbier.
